Vanity Dreams: Tips for Designing Your Perfect Space

We give so much attention to kitchen joinery, however when it comes to vanities we are all heart eyes over a practical layout and adding some character to this important space.

Vanities require careful planning and detailing. Getting the layout right is the most important part, once you have that ready, it's time to focus on the style! What a great day friends! Here are our top 6 things to consider.

01 Storage:

When designing the layout, storage is important. List the items you will be storing, if you have the space allow an extra 20% for storage. Drawers are a great way to maximise cabinet space, and fantastic for storing smaller items and your hairdryer/straightener. However you may prefer doors, open shelves or a combination.

TIP: If you are designing an open shelf, what will you be storing? Consider the height.

02 Height:

One of the most overlooked areas of vanity design is the height, if you are taller increasing the height will be an important feature for you.

TIP: If you plan to sell consider what height you choose.

03 Basins:

Consider the type of basin, undermount, drop-in, or vessel. The position of the basin plays an important part, particularly if your design includes one basin, think about how you use the space and if you prefer the basin to the left, right, or centred. If opting for two basins ensure you have enough bench space to make it work.  Ideally you want to have at least 200mm clearance either side.

TIP: If the vanity is against a wall with one basin, consider placement. If off centre place basin to the opposite side of the wall so you have bench space for your hair dryer near the PowerPoint.

04 Small spaces:

Powder Rooms tend to be smaller spaces where storage is not necessarily required. Make the space a feature, consider a stone bench with a feature stone apron front and beautiful tiles from floor to ceiling behind your vanity. Powder Rooms are perfect for getting creative and adding interest for your guests!

TIP:  A floating vanity or benchtop can make a small space appear bigger.

05 Finishes and materials:

Stone benchtops are the most durable and practical for wet areas, however if you are on a tight budget laminate is a cost effective option available in a wide variety of colours. You can add character with handles, or for a minimal look handle-less is a great option. Although these spaces tend to be smaller don't be afraid to add character..

TIP: Select good quality materials that will hold up to the durability of a wet area. Picking a finish or material that is not suitable can result in thousands of dollars to rip out. Oh my…

06 Fixtures:

Ensure your fixtures such as lights, handles, tapware, and mirrors flow with the rest of the scheme. Consider if the tapware will be bench mounted or wall mounted.

TIP: Keep the finish of the tapware, handles, fixtures consistent.

Are you ready to get started on your vanity design? We hope the tips above give you some inspiration to get started!
