Choosing the Perfect Mudroom for Your New Home or Renovation

It is easy to get swept away with beautifully designed mudrooms on social media. Before you know it you have saved over a dozen inspiration pictures and may feel a little overwhelmed with excitement! A good mudroom takes careful planning to maximise exactly what you want to get out of the space.

Typically Mudrooms are designed in the early stage of your renovation or new build to be close to the Laundry or Garage entrance. These days many people are combining their mudroom with the laundry if space allows. They can be seen as a behind the scene storage solution or on show as a practical design feature.

What can a mudroom be used for?

There are many practical and versatile solutions a mudroom can play in your day to day life:

  • A space to take off muddy boots

  • Storage for back packs and shoes

  • Storage for outdoor gear

  • Cubbies or drawers for sporting equipment (no more soccer balls in the lounge room thank you very much)

  • Hanging Coats

Things to consider for the layout:

  • A bench seat is a must! You need a place to sit down and kick off those boots or get them on!

  • Drawers are highly practical to incorporate under the bench seat (no wasted space here).

  • Think about the items you are storing and what would be more practical, tall doors with shelving, drawers, cubby spaces, or maybe a mixture.

  • If weekends are consumed by kids sports, it may be beneficial to combine the mudroom and laundry to get those dirty clothes straight off and into the wash (no clothes left on the floor waiting for the laundry fairy to come along and pick them up right?)

  • Lighting! Ensure you have good lighting, this is easily overlooked.

Consider the style:

  • Mudrooms can be stylish and fun, however keep the style consistent with your home.

  • If you are on a strict budget, adding colour to the cabinetry can make a huge impact.

  • Add character with hanging hooks, there are many options available for all styles from round timber hooks to brass finishes.

  • If adding a profile to the joinery, you don't have to go all out, for example a Country V Groove profile to the back panel where you hang your coats can make a big difference.

  • Mix finishes together, using rattan or mesh inserts on tall doors creates dynamic.

  • Select durable finishes for your joinery and flooring.

  • When it comes to the bench seat cushion, you want something easy to wipe down or take off and throw in the wash.

  • If you have cubby holes, there are many cost effective baskets that are stylish to hide those items!

What will you use your mudroom for?
