From Messy to Marvelous: Planning the Perfect Mudroom
OUR TIPS TO DESIGNING A FUNCTIONAL MUDROOM
It’s all too easy to get swept away by the jaw-dropping gorgeous mudrooms you see on social media. Before you know it, you’ve got a dozen inspiration pictures saved, and you’re bursting with excitement yet slightly overwhelmed!. But fear not! Crafting the perfect mudroom is all about careful planning to ensure it serves all your needs.
Typically, mudrooms are designed early in the renovation or new-build process, often near the laundry or garage entrance. These days, many people are blending their mudrooms with the laundry area, if space permits. Mudrooms can be a behind-the-scenes storage hero or a proud, practical design feature that’s on full display.
What Can a Mudroom Be Used For?
A mudroom isn't just a fancy name for an entryway. Here are some practical and versatile uses that make it a game-changer in your day-to-day life:
A space to take off muddy boots: No more tracking dirt through the house.
Storage for backpacks and shoes: Keep the clutter at bay.
Storage for outdoor gear: Ready for adventure at a moment's notice.
Cubbies or drawers for sporting equipment: No more soccer balls in the living room, score.
Hanging coats: Finally, a designated spot for all those jackets.
Things to Consider for the Layout:
A bench seat is a must! You'll want a spot to comfortably sit down and kick off or put on your boots. When planning your mudroom, keep the bench seat height in mind. We suggest aiming for a height between 450mm as a minimum and 550mm as a maximum.
Drawers under the bench seat: Make the most of your space with incredibly practical drawers that optimise every inch! For durability, we recommend the Hettich AvanTech YOU drawer profile, opt for either 40kg or 70kg runners. Available in a range of profile heights to suit the height of the drawer and colours. These drawers are perfect for organising shoes, preventing them from slipping out of side rails.
Storage solutions: Think about what you’re storing and choose between tall doors with shelving, drawers, cubby spaces, or maybe a mix of all three.
Combining mudroom and laundry: If weekends are filled with kids' sports, combining these spaces can make life easier. Dirty clothes go straight from the mudroom into the wash—no more piles on the floor waiting for the laundry fairy.
Lighting: Don’t underestimate its impact! Think about adding down lights to the overhead cabinets of your mudroom or routed strip lighting for a bright and inviting atmosphere.
