Bathroom Glow-Up: How to Design a Functional & Stylish Vanity
A well-designed vanity isn’t just a spot to stash your skincare—it sets the tone for the entire bathroom. Get the layout right, and you’ll have a space that works effortlessly. Then, it’s time to bring in the personality! Here are our key items to consider when designing your dream vanity.

Maximising storage
Before you dive into aesthetics, think about what you’ll actually be storing. From skincare to hair tools, give yourself an extra 20% storage buffer (trust us, you’ll use it).
Drawers = easy access + maximum use of space.
Prefer doors, open shelving, or a combo? Design based on what works best for your daily routine.
Include mirror cabinets for extra storage, if possible partially recess within the stud wall.
Benchtop Height
We recommend the top of basin to be between 850mm to 900mm from finished floor.
If you’re taller, consider increasing the height for better ergonomics and less hunching over the sink. Planning to sell your home? A standard height might be the safer choice for future buyers.
Choosing the right basin
Undermount, drop-in, or vessel—your basin choice sets the tone.
If you’re working with a single basin, placement matters! Do you want it centered? Or offset to one side?
If you’re going for double basins, make sure you have enough bench space for each (a minimum of 200mm clearance on either side is ideal).
If your vanity is against a wall with a single basin, place it away from the wall so you have practical bench space for your essentials—especially near the PowerPoint!
Small Spaces: Make It a Statement
Powder rooms often don’t need much storage, so why not make them the star of the show?
A stone bench with a bold apron front, floor-to-ceiling feature tiles, and eye-catching lighting can turn a small space into a serious design moment.
A floating vanity or benchtop can create the illusion of more space—perfect for compact areas.
Finishes & Materials
Stone benchtops reign supreme in wet areas, but if you're on a budget, laminate offers a stylish and cost-effective alternative.
Handles can add character, or keep things sleek with a handle-less design.
Choose materials that are built to last in wet areas. The wrong choice could mean an expensive rip-out later! (Yikes.)
Lighting
Good lighting can make or break your vanity space. Harsh overhead lights? Not ideal. Dim, shadowy corners? Also a no. The goal is soft, balanced lighting that makes everyday tasks—like makeup application or shaving—easy while also enhancing the vibe of your bathroom.
Tips:
Wall sconces or vertical lights on either side of the mirror provide the most even lighting for your face.
Backlit mirrors add a soft, modern glow and reduce glare.
Dimmable options let you switch from bright morning prep to spa-like evening relaxation.
Fixtures: The Finishing Touch
Cohesion is key! From tapware and handles to mirrors and lighting, keeping your finishes consistent ties the whole look together.
Also, decide whether you want bench-mounted or wall-mounted tapware, it will affect both style and function. Wall mounted will provide more bench space.
Sticking to a single finish across tapware, handles, and fixtures makes for a polished, high-end feel.
